Phonics
Words, words, words! First, the students will learn principles of language as they make and break common words. This is our Phonics component. It is important that your child understands the rules of language so he/she can apply patterns to a variety of words in his/her daily writing. Some lesson examples include:
- Hearing beginning/middle/ending sounds
- Rhyming and syllables
- Long and Short vowels
- Consonant clusters (str, bl, sl, tr), vowel teams (ea, ee, oa), digraphs (sh, ch, th)
- Inflectional endings (-s, -ed, -ing)
Along with learning different spelling patterns, students need to memorize second grade high frequency words. These words occur frequently in our reading and writing. They often need to be memorized because some cannot be spelled phonetically!
