Second Grade Homework Policy
The purpose of homework is to extend learning as independent practice at home to develop responsibility, respect, integrity, and perseverance. Please read the policy with your child, so that you understand the expectations of students and parents regarding homework.
For your child to be successful with homework, he/she needs:
A place to do homework. Your child should have a consistent, organized place, with materials (crayons, pencils, markers, scissors, glue sticks, paper, etc.) close by, to do his or her homework each day.
A schedule for completing homework. Set a consistent scheduled time for your child to do his/her homework each day. Be sure that your scheduled time fits in with your family’s weekly schedule.
Encouragement, motivation, and prompting. Make yourself available to your child during his/her homework time so you are able to provide guidance and support as needed. Please look over your child’s completed homework and sign it. This should indicate your child’s understanding of the concept.
An understanding of the knowledge. Talk with your child throughout each homework activity. Inquire about the skill he/she is using and his/her understanding of the concept that is being reviewed. If your child consistently cannot answer these questions, please contact me.
Reasonable homework expectations.

Reasonable homework expectations.
- Reading: Your child should be reading five days a week for a minimum of 20 minutes each night to develop habits of a good reader.
- Math: Your child will have a math Home Link four times each week to review concepts that have been taught.
- Spelling: Daily review of second grade high frequency words is recommended to prepare for quarterly assessments.
- Occasionally, your child will have a review to help him/her prepare for a subject area test.
- I will check homework each day for understanding of the concept. Since our goal is to lay the foundation for good homework habits, I expect homework to be returned on time on a consistent basis. I understand that, at times, unusual circumstances do not allow for this. In these situations, please let me know.
